How the World Wide Web Has Changed

When the Internet began, all a user could find were simple text pages. As the web grew and matured, so did the content, bringing us pictures, professional layouts, music, and online shopping.

Thirteen years ago, when the Internet was slow and it wasn't uncommon for a single web page to take several minutes to load, the idea of online videos was a laughable concept. After all, if it takes several minutes just to load a single gif image, how long would it take a short video, let alone a whole movie?

Now the Internet is packed with videos of all sorts. There are streaming videos and downloadable ones from free and paid services. There are sites where anyone can upload anything from a simple home movie to a promotional video for a product or service they're attempting to sell online. Now we are witnessing an explosion of online videos with sites offering free viewing of popular television programs, films, and documentaries.

Some of these services are scams at worst, and illegal at best. However, many are perfectly legitimate. Some are paid services that cost well below what you would spend for satellite television service. That's right. Online videos are growing in popularity to the point that households are canceling their television service and watching their favorite television programs on the Internet. It's less expensive and more convenient, allowing us all to watch whatever, whenever we choose. In addition, many people are hooking their computers up to their television sets. At this point, what's the difference?

Well before the mass media began using the Internet for program viewing, the web was utilised by many web savvy individuals and groups to produce viral videos to promote their web sites and products. Many have made a small fortune producing online videos in a spare room in their homes.

The political arena has also been deeply affected by online videos. Events on news networks are aired on video web sites within seconds with commentary. Events that have yet to be covered by the local media are already live on the Internet within minutes, giving average individuals the edge on news reporting.

While the Internet has changed the face of news reporting entirely, online videos have taken that a step further. With online videos, we are all news reporters, entertainers, and critics. With online videos, we all have a voice.
